The College of Public Health research faculty participates in the development and Implementation of data-driven infectious disease models in accordance with the needs of their funded research programs that result in significant articles published in highly ranked, peer reviewed research journals.


This position supports research faculty with the use of advanced computing, data science and programming resources within the USF research community for developing and analyzing data-driven transmission for various infectious diseases of concern. This position involves manipulation of large quantities of sensitive research data, mathematical derivation of transmission models, numerical and analytical analyses, and coding of the derived models. It is highly complex and varied work which requires the incumbent to be able to perform work using independent action and judgment, but also collaboratively.



  • Supports large-scale modeling and simulation research activities including the implementation of a variety of epidemic modeling techniques to new and existing public health problems.
  • Responsible for implementing these models at scale using both local and remote computer resources via workstations, clusters, and cloud computational resources. Recommends and obtains software resources that contributes to the project. Develop custom soft-ware, develop testing methods to complete research projects as needed.
  • Support large-scale data science efforts to visualize raw and simulated data as well as provide statistical analyses of the results as well as future machine learning and/or deep learning opportunities.
  • Conduct analytical and numerical analysis of models, calibrating and estimating models from data, implementing models using leading programming software such as VIZ, Matlab, C++ and Python.
  • Other duties as assigned.




  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences.


  • PhD in Dynamical Systems Modelling, Large-Scale Simulation/Computational Science, or in Computational Epidemiology.
  • Extensive experience with ODE and partial differential equation systems.
  • Experience with Matlab, Python, Julia, C/C++, or other high-performance programming language.
  • Extensive experience with numerical methods (specifically integrating initial value problems).
  • Experience with high performance computing clusters,
  • Experience with statistical data-model calibration/assimilation methods.
  • Experience with machine learning and/or deep learning.
